Tamil Nadu challenges order granting permission for RSS marches at Madras HC

Chennai: The state has filed an appeal in the Madras high court to set aside an order of a single judge which directed the police to grant permission to members of Rashtrya Swayam Sevaik Sangh (RSS) to take out processions in six districts including Chennai on the routes specified by the police on the occasion of their Founder’s Day on November 9 and to hold public meetings in the places earmarked by the police with such reasonable restrictions as they deem fit and proper.

When the appeal came up for hearing before a division bench comprising Justices Satish K. Agnihotri and K.K. Sasidharan, advocate Rabu Manohar took notice for Durai Sankar and six others, who were all the local office bearers of the RSS of the areas of Chennai, Mannargudi, Tuticorin, Karur, Coimbatore and Kanyakumari.

Declining to stay the operation of the order of the single judge, the bench posted the matter after four weeks.

Originally, on the petitions from Durai Sankar and six others, challenging the orders of the police, refusing permission to take out processions, Justice V. Ramasubramanian had on November 7 directed the police to grant permission to them.

However, when the members of RSS attempted to take out procession on November 9, the police arrested and released them.
