Kerala Government to appeal on bar issue before November 30

A single bench had allowed four-star bars to function

Kochi: The State Government on Tuesday submitted before the Kerala High Court that it would file an appeal in the bar case soon. The State has time till November 30 to file an appeal in the case.

The Government made the submissions when the appeals filed by several bar owners challenging the single bench order upholding the State's liquor policy came up for hearing. A division bench comprising Justice K.T. Sankaran and Justice P.D.Rajan considered the appeals.

The bench admitted the appeals and posted the case to November 25 for detailed hearing. The petitioners submitted that the single bench directive ordering status quo was set to end soon so the court ought to consider the pleas immediately. The court observed that it would consider the contentions later.

A single bench had allowed four-star bars to function. The petitioners argued that the single bench order was discriminatory in nature and the same was liable to be set aside.

The petitioners sought a directive to quash the Government order and to permit them to function in the State. The court refused to consider the petitions filed by 418 sub-standard bars which were closed down.

Several high profile advocates including Kapil Sibal and Aryama Sundaram had appeared before the court and argued the case.
