Chennai: Madras high court judge and executive chairman of Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority, Justice Satish K. Agnihotri, awarded Rs 67.27 lakh as compensation to the family of a 52-year old seaman, who died in a freak accident in a vessel, headed towards China from Indonesia in February this year. The ship owner, the Mumbai-based Orient Express Ship Management Ltd, released the amount.
D. Suganthi, wife of the seaman, Dilip Kumar, said that he was working as an electrical engineer fitter on various ships since 1997. In November 2013, he joined MV Liberty Prrudencia under Seafarers Employment Agreement on a salary of $1400 per month.
