Osmania University tense as students rally for employment

Following a clash between police and students, the protesters dispersed

Hyderabad: Tension mounted at Osmania University campus and Gunpark as members of Vidhyarthi Nirudhyoga Joint Action Committee took out a rally demanding the state government to fulfil the election promises of creating jobs for them.

The protesters, who called for a Chalo Assembly rally, asked the government to immediately appoint a public service commission in the state and withdraw the decision to regularise contract employees.

In a stone pelting incident at the NCC gate of OU campus, a journalist from a TV channel sustained minor injuries. More than 10 students, who reached Gunpark and started a protest, were stopped and taken into custody by the Saifabad police in the afternoon.

The trouble started on OU campus in the morning when the students took out a rally shouting slogans against the government. The East Zone police closed the gate and put barricades to prevent the students from coming.

Following a clash between police and students, the protesters dispersed.

However, most of them went to Gunpark and resumed the protest.

“We took the protesters into the custody on preventive measures, and they were let of in the evening,” a police official from Saifabad said.

The agitators demanded that the government should create one lakh job opportunities as they promised prior to the election. They also demanded that the Government should also recognise the role of students, who struggled for separate Telangana State before the division.
