CM K Chandrasekhar Rao plans to double pay and allowances for MLAs

Telangana has 120 MLAs and 40 MLCs out of them, 36 members are of Cabinet rank

Hyderabad: The salaries and allowances of legislators and Council members in Telangana are set to be more than doubled. MLAs and MLCs draw about Rs 95,000 per month each, Rs 12,500 as pay and Rs 82,500 as allowances. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has proposed to increase this to Rs 2 lakh.

Mr Rao felt that the salaries and allowances were not in accordance with their expenditure. “I want public representatives to work honestly. Then it is also necessary to see that they are adequately paid. Legislators are travelling in their own vehicles in their constituencies and coming to the Assembly.

Being members in various committees, they are attending various programmes besides meetings in district headquarters and are incurring heavy expenditure. I think a salary hike is needed,” Mr Rao said. Telangana has 120 MLAs and 40 MLCs. Of them, 36 members have Cabinet rank.
