KOLLAM: The alleged suicide of Roji Roy, 19, a nursing student of Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday last, has stirred up a controversy with many alleging that it was a case of murder.
Roji Roy, who was reportedly involved in a ragging case, had fallen from the tenth floor of the building and died, according to the private hospital authorities.
But action groups which have taken up the case of Roji Roy, the daughter of deaf and dumb parents in Kollam, have doubted the credibility of the explanations given by the authorities.
The Facebook networking groups have called for a black day on Tuesday in solidarity with the girl’s family. They have organised candle light protests across the country and will send one lakh letters to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy seeking justice to Roji Roy.
They performed a candle light protest march in Kollam the other day. Her parents Roy and Sajitha also took part in a meeting supported by the deaf and dumb association.
Sanjay Nallila, Roji Roy action council secretary, told DC, “The incident had no eyewitnesses. But as per the report given to the police by the hospital authorities, it was a clear case of suicide.
The incident should be probed by honest officers. No action has yet been taken against the principal of the institution and she is on leave. The hospital authorities also told the police that the surveillance cameras were not working, which is suspicious,” he said.
The relatives of the girl also denied the possibilities of a suicide and alleged that she was murdered. After she got involved in the ragging case, she was taken to the principal’s room from her hostel in a private jeep by the hostel warden, as per the statement given to the police.
The relatives asked why she was taken in a private jeep and not in the college bus and why the warden left the place without meeting the principal.
Protest meetings will be organised at Kattakkada, in front of the secretariat and the martyrs’ memorial at Palayam in the capital city in the coming days.
