IPL spot-fixing: 3 exonerated players were not questioned by Mudgal panel

Mudgal panel suggests underworld's key involvement in betting and fixing

Mumbai: The three players, who were named in Mudgal panel's first report were not interrogated by the Supreme Court appointed extended panel, it is learnt here.

The three IPL players-Stuart Binny, Samuel Badree (West Indies) and Owais Shah (England)-have been exonerated by Mukul Mudgal committee. According to the sources, the names of these players came only in "passing remarks and out of jealousy" by few of those who appeared before the panel and no evidence of wrong-doings were found against them and therefore were not being questioned.

Interestingly, Stuart Binny, the son of the national selector Roger Binny, was a part of the the Indian squad in the recently concluded series against Sri Lanka.

So the original list of 13 culprits may have been reduced to ten now, but the reference of involvement of mafia has not been ruled out in the final report.

"Those named in the report are only dancing at the tune of mafia and underworld and unless they are not caught, this practice of wrong-doings is unlikely to stop", the source close to the panel, says.

Former Justice view

Despite the name of Sundar Raman was in the original report, the IPL's official was allowed to discharge duty in this year's IPL by the Supreme Court.

"Raman's name was there in the first report but not "with force then", and the BCCI would have had to cancel the IPL season this year as he (Raman) was a key IPL member for organizing the matches and therefore we allowed him to work with Sunil Gavaskar", the former Supreme Court judge, A.K.Patnaik, who was a party to the decision, said exclusively over telephone from Delhi.

Sundar Raman is believed to have had given the impression to the probe committee that he would leave the BCCI job and join the IMG, the global sports management company, it is also learnt here.
