Chief Minister must take bold steps: Karunanidhi

Tamil Nadu govt not keen to hold Assembly session, says M Karunanidhi
Chennai: DMK chief M. Karunanidhi has called upon Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam to initiate ‘bold’ steps to resolve the inter-state water disputes with neighbouring Kerala and Karnataka.“He is apprehensive of convening a special session of the state Assembly on the issue, as there may be a danger for him in holding the post. He should overcome such fears and take steps in the interest of people’s welfare,” he said in a release here on Sunday.
Alleging that no counter-measures were taken on the Mullaiperiyar dam issue and also on the proposed check-dam to be constructed at the Cauvery by Karnataka, he said the Chief Minister, considered that writing letters to the PM would bring a solution to the issues. The DMK stalwart also claimed that the government had not convened the Cabinet to discuss and decide on the issue although senior engineers in Tamil Nadu expected the government to go on an appeal before the Supreme Court on the Mullaperiyar dam issue.
On a Karnataka minister’s assertion that his government had proposed to construct check-dams across the Cauvery river, Mr Karunanidhi said he had issued a statement that the Tamil Nadu government should convene the Assembly session and pass a resolution, condemning Karnataka’s decision.“But the Tamil Nadu government is not inclined to call an all-party meeting or hold an Assembly session on the subject,” he said. Former Union minister G. K. Vasan said Kerala should honour the apex court order and ensure that TN received its due share of water.
