Students find maths, data tough in CAT
Even though pattern was revised this year student found many surprises in test paper
Chennai: Students who took the Common Admission Test (CAT) for a seat in one of the country’s top B-schools, including IIM, found Mathematics and data interpretation difficult this year. Even though the IIMs had revised the pattern this year to provide more flexibility and time to students to attempt all questions, many felt that the papers had many “surprises”. Over 1,000 students took the computer-based test at five institutions in the city, including G.K.M. college of engineering, Perungalathur, and Saveetha engineering college, Thandalam, on Sunday.
Bishvesh, an engineering student who attended the test at G.K.M. college, was not very happy about the questions asked. He said the question paper had several surprises and it was lengthy, which consumed more time. Mathematics was tough, data interpretation had several complex questions which made it difficult for him to answer all questions. “Logical reasoning in English, too, was challenging,” he said.
As expected, although there were a number of questions in Quant and Verbal sections with the changed pattern, the difficulty level ranged from moderate to difficult. Overall, the candidates found the test moderate. It was not that all students felt every other part difficult. Prafulla Chandra, who was seen smiling after the test, felt Quant was easy.
“The difficulty level in English and Logical Reasoning was high. The question paper has been designed in such a way that it tested our analytical skills and it had no questions with ambiguity,” he added. Divya, another CAT aspirant, felt that Logical Reasoning was difficult, whereas Mathematics turned out to be easy. Most of the aspirants complained that Logical Reasoning questions took them for a ride, consumed a lot of time and energy.
The test had two batches with the morning session at 9.30 and the evening, at 3 pm. This year, the test is conducted only on two days (November 16 and November 22). The duration of the examination has been increased from 140 minutes to 170 minutes. Questions in each section, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning have been increased from 30 to 50 in each section.
With the changes, candidates have the flexibility to devote more or less time to each section according to their ability and they could switch over from one section to another section for the duration of the examination. IIM Indore coordinates the test this year and a private company administers the test in all centres across the country. The test is computer-based with different questions posted to different students randomly.
