West Godavari people hope good days are ahead

Nirmala keeps her word by adopting two villages in W.G.
NARASAPUR: Gods have smiled upon two villages in West Godavari and great times are ahead for the people of the villages as the Union minister of state for commerce, Nirmala Sitharaman, who is daughter-in-law of Narsapur, has adopted them.
Some time ago, the Union minister promised to the people of Narsapur that as the daughter-in- law of the constituency she would pay them back.
Keeping her word, she adopted the two villages of Pedamainavani Lanka and Toorputhallu.
On Sunday, to the surprise of the local people, Ms Sitharaman arrived in the two villages and interacted with the public freely. She also swept the roads as part of Swachh Bharat campaign. The local people apprised her of their problems. “Pedamaina vani Lanka is under serious threat from the sea. Due to influx of sea water, the major part of the village went under the sea some time ago.
The officials relocated the village four or five kilometre away. Even now, the sea is posing a threat to the people in the village,” said Pedamaynivani Lanka village sarpanch T. Nagalakshmi.
She said that another major problem is lack of potable water, as the wells have become salinated and the people used to request the government to give salt-less water to them for drinking. Many people in the village are depending upon fishing, but, owing to lack of proper facilities in the village, some of them had migrated for their livelihood.
“The people who migrated to other places visit the village twice during Vinayaka Cha-vithi festival and jathara of local goddess in April month,” said T. P. Prathap, the ZPTC member.
The people of Toorputhallu said that there was no power for their village and now the minister raised hopes of development and good times among them.
They said that employment opportunities should be also be provided to their youth besides giving good education to their children. The Narsapuram MLA, Bandaru Madhavanaidu, said that they were hoping that the two villages would be developed with the initiative and efforts of Ms Nirmala Sitha-raman.
