Gang was hired to kill teacher Ravi Robert due to personal dispute
Chennai: The city police on Sunday arrested a five-member gang hired for Rs3 lakh by a man from Paramakudi, to kill a teacher in Chennai. They had twice come close to their target during the week, but the police, on Saturday evening, found an SUV, with Ramanathapuram registration, on Canal Bank road in Kotturpuram, doing many rounds and stopped it for checking. During the inspection, they found arms in the vehicle and took the men to the station for questioning.
Their inquiries revealed that the gang was hired by Dinakaran, in Paramakudi, at the behest of Paneerselvam, who wanted to eliminate teacher Ravi Robert.Paneerselvam’s widowed daughter-in-law, Subha, was living in Chennai with her sister Vedha and her husband Ravi Robert.
Subha had decided to cut all links with Paneerselvam’s family after the death of her husband because of alleged torture by her father-in-law, which had, at times been sexual in nature. But Paneerselvam had kept asking her for the custody of their three children and believed that Ravi Robert was influencing Subha. So, he decided to eliminate him by hiring mercenaries.
The police identified the arrested as Kutty alias Ranjithkumar, 24, an accused in an explosives case in Ramanathapuram, Karthikeyan, 19, Rajendran, 20, Prabhu, 21 and Stephen,19. The police, who seized swords and sickles from the SUV, said they would be booking Paneerselvam for hatching the murder plot.
The gang, which had been camping at a lodge in Pallavaram and monitoring Ravi’s movements, had been paid an advance of Rs25,000. They had called off the kill the first time as their target was with kids
