CPM calls for law against honour killing
Introduction of separate legislation will curb honour killing
Chennai: CPM state secretary G. Ramakrishnan on Sunday urged the Tamil Nadu government to bring out a separate legislation to end honour killing.“As many as 33 honour killings has been reported in the state in the last couple of years. Hence, there is a need for introducing a separate legislation to curb honour killing,” Mr Ramakrishnan said while addressing his party’s south Chennai district conference here on Sunday.
Citing the honour killing of Vimala Devi in Usilampatti, he said a CBI probe has been ordered into the case following the protest by Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradicaiton Front.
Vimala Devi, a caste Hindu, was married to Dilipkumar, a Dalit. Unable to digest the marriage of their daughter to a Dalit youth, the parents of Vimala Devi, in connivance with some police personnel, had ‘killed’ the young girl, he alleged.
After the Narendra Modi-led BJP government came to power, he alleged that he has been paying back to the corporates who helped him come to power with reform measures. “In the last one year, the country’s top 10 companies’ asset value has gone up by Rs 2.15 lakh crore,” he said, adding that in the ensuing winter session of Parliament, the Modi government plans amend at least 40 Acts, including land acquisition Act and forest rights Act.
