Women prisoners not being harassed, says Umashree
BENGALURU: Following allegations that women inmates at Parappana Agrahara central prison were sexually harassed by jail officials and male inmates, Minister for Women and Child Development Umashree and BJP leader and MLA Tara Anuradha visited the prison on Saturday to take stock of the situation.
After the visit Umashree told reporters that she had interacted with several woman inmates and they had denied facing any sexual harassment inside the prison.
“They have told me that they have not written any complaint about the harassment and there was no such incident in the prison. They say that the jail officials are good and there is no truth in the allegations.”
“However, a committee comprising top officials from the women and child development department and the home department has been formed to probe into the allegations.
I have asked the inmates to interact with the committee officials without any fear and inform them about the problems they are facing,” the minister added.
BJP leader Tara also said that during her interaction with female inmates they had denied any incidents of sexual harassment and favours.
Meanwhile, prison officials claim that the allegations were made to tarnish the image of prison.
