GHMC bad at job distribution
Distribution of workers is not done as per the area and size of the municipal war
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has been following an unorganised system of sanitation wing distribution. The reason for garbage overflow, filthy roads and uncleared bins, is said to be the insufficient number of sanitation workers allotted to each municipal ward. For instance, Kapra has been allotted 136, while Yapral 50, Aliyabad 36, Champapet 257 and Chandanagar 180.
The distribution of workers is not done as per the area and size of the municipal ward, and it is the same case with funds distribution. The Standing Committee of the GHMC has sought an explanation on staff distribution following several complaints.
The Corporation has sufficient number of workers, but their distribution is done a haphazard manner.
Moreover, the numbers shown in the record do not match the number of workers on the job. For instance in Kapra, if the allotted number shows 136 on record, only 70 per cent of them will be at work.
Hyderabad mayor Majid Hussain said, “This has been the long-pending demand from the corporators. The sanitation units in most of the ward need to be revamped and their numbers should also be increased. Shortage of staff is the reason behind many lanes and bylanes being swept only once in three days. The sweeping units need to be revamped; annually Rs 300 crore is allocated to the health and sanitation wing.
Another major problem is the frequent strikes. As of today, there are 12 GHMC employee unions and whenever the union leaders call for a strike, the employees follow the directive and boycott duties. The GHMC does not have a direct hold on the workers.”
