BENGALURU: City Police Commissioner M. N. Reddi said the police have requested the High Court to facilitate speedy trial of rape cases.
He was speaking to reporters at a Children’s Day programme organised by the city police and Child Helpline on Friday. “We have requested the High Court to facilitate speedy trial and judgment in rape cases, especially sexual assault of children, by the lower courts.”
The top cop maintained that there was no rise in rape cases in the city. “After the amendments to the laws following the Nirbhaya case, cases of outraging modesty of a woman, assault on women and harassment to women are also being registered as rape cases.
So, the number of rape cases being registered has increased. But, it should not be mistaken that the city is not safe for women or no one should be worried that there are so many rapes happening in the city,” Mr Reddi said.
Earlier, speaking at the programme, he asked the children not to fear the police. “We are here to help people. There is absolutely no need for children to fear the police.
We are planning programmes where students will be brought to police stations and made to interact with the police,” he added.
