CBSE youth festival kicks off despite hiccups

The inaugural function behind schedule affected the whole schedule
Thiruvananthapuram: Starting troubles marked the first day of the CBSE youth festival which began at Mar Ivanios Vidya Nagar here on Friday.
Though organisers could not be blamed for the time lag, the events started late. The organisers had waited for a long time for Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala to arrive to inaugurate the function.
Finally the organisers, who were informed that the Minster would not arrive, asked Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, head of the Syro Malankara church to inaugurate the programme.
However, the cardinal asked film star Jagadeesh, CBSE Regional Officer Mahesh Dharmadhikari and Confederation of Kerala Sahodaya Complexes President K Unnikrishnan to join him, making it a group event.
With the inaugural function behind schedule although it was supposed to take off at 11.30 a.m. the time lag affected the whole schedule. However, by afternoon the Youth festival slowly gained momentum.
As the programme was organised at Mar Ivanios Vidya Nagar a 43-hectare educational campus at Nalanchira under Malankara Catholic Church with 17 institutions inside the campus, the organizers perhaps had the best infrastructure in a single place.
Problems like travel between various venues were reduced for those taking part in the competition as it was being held in the educational complex in a single place. The programme was being conducted on 16 stages inside the campus. The organizers arranged a separate venue for prize distribution to avoid time delay.
The vast campus also solved the problems of accommodation. Lodgings for participants were arranged at Mar Baselios Engineering College, St John’s School and Mar Gregorius Renewal Centre within the campus. Infant Jesus School, Kawdiar is the only place where accommodation was arranged outside the Vidya Nagar campus.
The CBSE State Kalotsav 2014, being held here, had a surprise for everyone – a unique waste management system. The school has joined hands with a company called Steel Tech to set up a unique incinerator ‘No Waste’ at the premises of the main stage.
Mohammed of Steel Tech says, “This plant has been set up using a unique technology that helps burn waste without using any kind of fuel. It works using the thermodynamic principle. But the plant can process only combustible waste. Plastic, polythene or other such materials should not be put in it.” He adds that it is the first such system in India and that his company has set up more such plants at KIMS, SUT and many other hospitals in the city.
The plant was set up at the Sarvodaya School 6 months ago and it has definitely proved useful for managing waste during the CBSE fest. Students performing at the main stage found this facility very useful. “I haven’t seen anything like this ever before. Usually when we go for such school fests we almost definitely see heaps of piled up garbage. But here, the plant helps deal with the waste at least partially” said Athira, a participant of the Kalotsav.
But not many are aware of this facility and most people are dumping waste at a corner of the school ground. “I wasn’t aware of the plant before and was dumping waste at the ground. If there is such a system, the authorities should have made people aware of it. Then they could have avoided making the school ground a garbage pit” says Rema, a parent.
Rajeev, an employee of the school says, “Though people are dumping waste at the school ground, we’ll be removing it and processing the waste with the help- of the plant.”
