Case against DMK councillor for tearing Jayalalithaa's picture
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore police have slapped a criminal case on a woman DMK councillor who tore up the picture of the former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in front of the Corporation council hall recently.
The ward councillor of Rathinapuri, Meena Logu, has been booked under Sections 294 (B) of the Indian Penal Code ( singing or uttering obscene songs or words in public) Section 355 (using criminal force with intent to dishonor a person) and under the provisions of the Prohibition of Indecent Representation of Women Act 1986.
Cases have also been filed against theDMK’s opposition leader A.Nandakumar and another DMK councillor, Ravi under Section 355 of Indian Penal Code. The offence, if proved, will attract imprisonment upto two years or a fine or both.
As the Coimbatore corporation council held an emergency meeting on Wednesday, the DMK councillors squatted outside the corporation building, raised a ruckus, demanding the removal of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s picture from the walls of the council hall.
As the police prevented the DMK councillors from entering the council hall, woman councillor Meena Logu ripped into two pieces the picture of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. She also made caustic references to Jayalalithaa’s conviction in the disproportionate assets case, offending the sentiments of the ruling AIADMK members. “Remove Jayalalithaa’s pictures or display the picture of DMK president and former chief minister M.Karunanidhi also too at the council hall,” Meena Logu and other DMK councillors had insisted.
Reacting to the criminal case registered against her, Meena Logu said that she was shocked that the police have chosen to slap a case on her.
“The AIADMK cadres slippered, battered tore up pictures of DMK leader Karunanidhi and burnt his effigies to express their anger over the conviction of their leader Jayalalithaa in disproportionate asset case. But the police chose to remain a silent spectator.
But now they have booked a case against me for tearing up the former chief minister’s picture,” she charged.
