Bridge to reduce man-animal conflict

The forest department proposes to build a flyover on the elephant corridor in Kallar
Coimbatore: The forest department proposes to build a flyover on the elephant corridor in Kallar at the foothills of Nilgiris, to bring down the increasing man-animal conflict.
The World Wildlife Fund India (WWF) undertook a study and suggested construction of a bridge across the elephant migratory pathway in the foothills of Nilgiris to bring down conflicts.
Following this, forest department secretary Hans Raj Verma, accompanied by Mr V.K. Melkani, principal chief conservator of forests, collector, Ms Archana Patnaik, visited Kallar on Friday to look at the proposal to construct a flyover linking hairpin bend 1 and 2, where elephants cross over frequently.
“A feasibility study needs to be undertaken before starting the project,” said a forest department official.
