Poor quality of education in Visakhapatnam colleges exposed

There are more than a thousand colleges in the state

Visakhapatnam: With just nine colleges from AP finding a place in the list of Colleges with Potential for Excellence prepared by UGC, doubts are being raised about the poor the quality of education in Vizag though there are 150 colleges affiliated to Andhra University in Vizag. If a college is listed here, it qualifies for a UGC grant of Rs 1.5 crore over a period of five years.

Further, the UGC recognised colleges of excellence get Rs 2 crore over the same period. Of the nine CPEs, two each are from Nellore, West Godavari and Vijayawada and one each from, Kurnool, Anatapur and Eluru.

One important criterion of eligibility is that a college should be NAAC accredited with at least B grade. However, the sad fact is that while there are more than a thousand colleges in the state, according to NAAC accredited colleges, there are just a little more than hundred colleges which are accredited.
