PM Narendra Modi pays tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru on 125th birth anniversary

Modi has been accused by Congress of ignoring Nehru

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tributes to Jawaharlal Nehru on his 125th birth anniversary, remembering his efforts during the freedom struggle and his role as the first Prime Minister.

"Today we mark the 125th birth anniversary of our first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. My tributes to him," tweeted Modi, who is on a visit to Australia.

"We remember Pandit Nehru's efforts during the freedom struggle and his role as the first Prime Minister of India," he said in another tweet.

Modi has been accused by Congress of ignoring Nehru and appropriating the legacy of freedom movement leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel.

The Prime Minister recently reconstituted an official committee for commemorating the 125th anniversary of Nehru. No one from the Nehru-Gandhi family was included in it even though three Congress leaders are its members.

Modi has made it clear that the anniversary will be celebrated in a big way.
