Srinagar: The three young Kashmiri men Shehzad Ahmed, Muhammad Shaffi and Reyaz Ahmed were lured from their homes in Nadihal village of Baramulla district by the Armymen with the promise of money and jobs, and shot dead near the LoC. The gruesome killings led to a two-month agitation in the Kashmir Valley.
The Army court martial proceedings began in January this year and ended in September. All the soldiers and officers were found guilty of conspiracy, murder and falsely calling the slain men terrorists. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said: “This is indeed a welcome step.” He also tweeted: “I hope we never see such Machael fake encounter type of incidents ever again, and let this serve as a warning to those tempted to try.”
He later added on Twitter: “This is a watershed moment. No one in Kashmir ever believed justice would be done in such cases. Faith in institutions disappeared.”On April 30, 2010, the Army said it killed three terrorists in the Machael sector and claimed they were heavily armed. Pakistanis who just sneaked into J&K to carry out terror strikes.
Investigations revealed the trio was lured to relocate to the LoC after being promised they would be provided with jobs in the Army. Going by the findings, Maj. Upinder of 4 Rajput Battalion entered into a criminal conspiracy with Abbas Hussein, a resident of Kamalkote village in Uri.
