British support for Aluva municipality

Priority to cleaning River Periyar
Kochi: The UK-based Atkins, an engineering and project consultancy, will develop a masterplan for Aluva Municipality taking into account its development needs for the next 50 years. The priority would be on cleaning River Periyar, solid waste management and uniform transport system for the town, Roger Savage, director Atkins UK, told reporters at the end of the two-day workshop on the subject held in Kochi on Friday.
A report on the works to be undertaken in these three areas is expected to be completed in March, he said. Scouting for funds for these projects would be done in association with other stakeholders, he added. The proposals would be a substantial complement to the to-be announced Town Masterplan, Savage said.
The Masterplan is being prepared with financial assistance from British Government, said Bharat Joshi, British deputy high commissioner in Chennai. Aluva Municipal Chairman, MT Jacob, said that the association with the UK would help in formulating globally acceptable project proposals without the local body incurring any expenditure for the purpose. Municipal councilors, senior officials from Town Planning, Kochi Metro, state police and power and water utilities attended the two-day workshop.
