Athirampuzha fest to relive ancient Travancore

The five-day fest is intended to revive the rich history of commerce and trade
KOTTAYAM: While the Athirampuzha fest is to be held at the St Mary’s Church from November 20 to 24, it evokes memories and traditions of a glorious history of trade and commerce in one of the ancient markets of Central Travancore.
History says commerce and trade were at their zenith in Athirampuzha and goods were brought from Alappuzha, Cochin, Kayamkulam and Kollam through the Vembanad lake and its tributary, the Pennar river in Athirampuzha. The Athirampuzha market is more than 150 years old.
Spices were also brought here from the hilly districts of Idukki and Kottayam in bullock carts through the Athirampuzha-Poonjar road. The Athirampuzha market was also popular for cattle sale and exchange.
“According to history, labourers in Athirampuzha market would decorate the ‘Kettuvallams’ in which provisions were brought to the market. This was done as an offering to St Sebastian who they believed had helped them in bringing in their merchandise safely to the market.
The five-day fest organized by St Mary’s Church in Athirampuzha is intended to revive the rich history of commerce and trade that existed there ages ago.
