Experts focus on smaller projects
Hyderabad: The government should focus on low hanging fruits in the defence manufacturing to make its Make in India mission successful, said experts on Thursday.
“Industry should concentrate on easily achievable short-term needs instead of long term ones, which will take years to succeed. The Indian Navy, for instance, needs unmanned surface vessels, unmanned aerial vehicles, paper batteries, OBMs for acoustic blanketing, diver scooters, low observable semi-submersible craft, portable ascenders for amphibious raids, etc. These are easily achievable targets, which SMEs should take up for growing bigger,” said vice-admiral (reti-red) Pradeep Chauhan, at Defence and Aerosuppy India conference in Hyderabad on Thursday.
Mr Chauhan called for an interaction between the defence forces, industry and academia to develop an indigenous defence industry in the country.
Earlier, V.K. Saraswat, former secretary, department of defence research and development, said that the Indian defence and aerospace industry will offer business opportunity in the range of $200 billion in the next 15 years.
Out of this, he said $30 billion would be by way of offsets alone.
