Two thousand matric schools await Tamil Nadu nod
Education department yet to take a final call on institutions
Chennai: More than 2,000 private matric schools in the state function without the mandatory approval for more than two years as the state school education department is yet to take a decision on their approval as several schools either lacked mandatory building approval or had less land against the mandatory three to six acres. Two years ago the state government constituted a committee with director of school education as its chairman with members from Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), Directorate of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) and revenue officials.
K.R. Nandakumar, secretary of TN nursery, primary, matric and higher secondary schools association said that the committee held several rounds of discussions with schools to arrive at an amicable solution keeping students interest in mind. “Most of these schools are over two decades old and it is difficult for them to buy additional land in cities like Chennai, Tiruchy, Madurai and Coimbatore as real estate price has sky-rocketed. We highlighted all these issues to the committee and also represented to the government to exempt these schools,” he said.
Correspondent of one of the unapproved schools who on condition of anonymity fearing wrath of the government said that the committee had submitted its report to the state school education department which was yet to take a final decision on the issue. “Every time we enquire with officials they give no concrete reply but say the school education department is yet to take a final decision in the issue,” the correspondent said. An official said they too await the government’s decision, as it needs changes in the existing norms.
