Meter recalibration to end fleecing
Legal Metrology Department fixing meters of nearly 100 autos every day
Kochi: For over a month, those who depended on autorickshaws were often at the receiving end with no option other than to dole out charges demanded by auto drivers. The reason, the fare revision was effected in September but the meters were not readied accordingly.
Finally, the Legal Metrology Department resumed the meter recalibration process, fixing meters of nearly 100 autos every day.
“The meter recalibration could not be done for over a month due to delay in making available the new software. However, it’s ready now and is provided to the Repairer Licensees from October 4. Now daily, we’re calibrating the meters according to the new fare scheme in at least 90 autos. I’ve allotted dates for autos till December 31,” said Suja Joseph, senior inspector, Legal Metrology Department.
As per the fare revision, the minimum charge was increased to Rs 20 in autos and for each km after a distance of 1.5 km, the running fare was hiked from Rs 8 to Rs 10.
“In the name of fare hike, the auto drivers were exploiting the common man. There were instances when some of our members were charged Rs 25 for travelling the minimum distance. When asked to operate on meter, they say it’s yet to be recalibrated,” said Mr S. Padmanabha Mallya, secretary, West Kochi Passengers’ Association.
However, the Motor Vehicles Department has decided to grant time to autorickshaw drivers to correct the meters. “It will definitely take some time to calibrate the meters according to the new fare scheme. This has to be done and sealed after inspection by the Department of Legal Metrology. After that, we’ll conduct inspections,” said Mr Shaji PM, Regional Transport Officer.
