Hubballi: The Janata Dal (S) could lose several of its legislators in North Karnataka to either the BJP or Congress before the panchayat elections next year as they seem to be merely biding their time, having already come out in the open about their discontentment with both party supremo, H D Deve Gowda and his son and former Chief Minister, H D Kumaraswamy.
It is believed these legislators are for now adopting a wait and watch approach hoping that their public criticism will change the attitude of the father-son duo.
While six JD(S) legislators romped home in North Karnataka during the last Assembly election they did so more on their own steam as neither Mr Gowda nor Mr Kumaraswamy campaigned for them.
Many candidates, who had contested these elections on a JD(S ) ticket, have already moved to other political parties , fed up with the failure of the leadership to revive the party in the region. Most have joined the BJP banking on the Modi wave to give their political careers a boost.
The legislators themselves seem keen on the Congress as it could bring grants from the government for development of their constituencies.
“We will not win the panchayat elections if Kumaraswamy continues to neglect the party in North Karnataka. He has not fielded strong candidates for the polls and did not field the right candidates even during the last Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, causing the party a severe setback in the region.
It will be no surprise if the JD(S) becomes an empty house in North Karnataka,” warns Gangavati MLA, Iqbal Ansari, adding that disgruntled leaders like him have decided to wait for a few months before taking any drastic step as byelections at this juncture may not go down well with voters.
“The JD(S) leadership has become inactive due to lack of proper communication. I will take a delegation of party leaders from North Karnataka to Bengaluru to speak to Kumaraswamy about the plight of the party in the region,” said MLC Basavaraj Horatti.
