Industries back with a bang

Normal production may take time, but all units are up and running

Visakhapatnam: A month after Cyclone Hudhud battered Vizag, all major PSUs and industries are back on track.

Due to the devastation caused by the cyclone, all PSUs barring VPT and other industries like RINL, HPCL, HSL and BHPV had to suspend operations for almost 15 days.

RINL had revived production last week, though it will take a few months for it to achieve normal production. HPCL restarted refining 15 days ago and Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. is also up and running as it undocked the submarine, INS Sindhukirti, which was undergoing a refit.

While many industries took at least 20 days to get back on track, Vizag port had bounced back and started handling cargo within just four days after Hudhud.

And by Tuesday, the cargo handling at Vizag port had reached its average capacity of 1.7 lakh tonnes per day.

On November 2, RINL managed to revive all its operations and began production at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). After VPT, the Navaratna Steelmaker was the first PSU in Vizag to begin production post Hudhud.

The HPCL- Visakh refinery, where operations were also suspended due to damages, has also resumed refining crude.

Visakh refinery has a capacity to produce 8.3 MMT of crude per annum, which was disturbed for almost two weeks. HPCL has estimated losses of Rs 100 crore due to damages to its various equipment.

At NTPC Simhadri, all the four units had resumed operations within no time. However, one unit was shut two days ago for annual maintenance of a month. Production at BHPV-BHEL has also resumed.
