Dry Sundays, less outlets curb liquor sales in Kerala

In terms of revenue also, there was a decline by one percent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With Sundays being made dry days and 39 liquor outlets being closed down from October, the quantity of liquor and beer being sold in the state witnessed further dip by -2 and -4 percent respectively.
While there was a dip in the quantity of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) by -4 percent till the end of September this fiscal compared to the corresponding period last fiscal, by the end of October the sale further came down to -6. In the case of beer, there was a dip of sale by -7 percent till the end of September this fiscal compared to the corresponding period of last fiscal. By the end of October, it further came down to -11.
In terms of revenue also, there was a decline by one percent. While there was an eight percent increase in gross sale till September this fiscal compared to the corresponding period last fiscal, it came down to seven percent by the end of October. It was owing to the hike in taxes that the gross sales registered increase despite decline in sale in terms of quantity.
According to Kerala State Beverages Corporation sources, 133 lakh cases of IMFL were sold out in the state till October end this fiscal, compared to 141 lakh cases during the corresponding period last fiscal.
In the case of beer, the sale till October this fiscal was 52.45 lakh cases whereas it was 59 lakh cases during the corresponding period last year.
