Bangladeshi arrested in defence firing range
Man caught was going to Trisoolam station but took the wrong direction
Chennai: At a time when militants belonging to Bangladesh-based JMB and Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) are making headlines in India, particularly after the October 2 blast in Burdwan in West Bengal, a man from Bangladesh, found roaming around the defence firing range in Trisoolam, was caught and handed over to the Meenambakkam police station on Tuesday.
The police said Mohamed Battar Ali, 35, was in possession of a passport and visa but failed to explain the reason behind his presence at the firing range.Various security agencies had questioned him, using the help of a few translators, since Monday evening after army men caught him at the firing range.Ali told the investigators that he left his country on November 1 to India looking for a job. He also told sleuths from ‘Q’ branch, IB and other agencies that he had first reached Kolkata and then travelled to Delhi. From there, he went to Maharashtra before reaching Thiruvanathapuram. From Thiruvanathapuram he came to Chennai a couple of days back.
He also claimed that he was supposed to go to the airport from Trisoolam station but took the wrong direction and ended up at the firing range. The probe team is not very happy with his answers. He has also failed to give a convincing replay to questions related to his visa and travel expenses.
It is not clear how he was able to spend so much to travel across the country during the last 10 days. He also claimed that he was from a poor family and had to sell his cattle to buy medicines for his ailing wife back home in Bangladesh.
