Anna Nagar assailants plan foiled
Accused were caught in West Bengal, brought to Chennai
Chennai: The main accused in the armed robbery at Dr R. Anandan’s residence at Anna Nagar on November 4, lived in abject poverty and were planning to move to Bangladesh with the valuables they had looted from the house, investigations have revealed. The accused were brought to the city on Tuesday and the valuables recovered from them were kept on display at the police commissioner’s office where joint commissioner (JC) C. Sridhar addressed a media gathering.
The JC took the opportunity to reiterate the city police’s advisory of verification of antecedents before employing domestic aides. Maid Hakleema Bibi (40) alias Meena sketched the whole plan, the JC said.On November 4, two robbers aided by Hakleema Bibi, entered Dr Anandan’s house at ‘Q’ block 15th street in Anna Nagar and tied the women occupants before fleeing with 119 sovereigns of gold, 5 kg of silver articles and Rs 4 lakh cash.
The police managed to recover all the silver articles, 107 sovereign gold jewellery and Rs 65,000 cash. “They had stashed the silver articles in a mansion room in Hyderabad-their first stop after the robbery. A portion of the booty was recovered there while the rest was recovered in Kolkata,” JC Sridhar said. A.Shanthi, Dr Anandan’s wife, who was watching television in the hall, recalled how the maid Meena went to clean an hour early that day, only to return with two men who tied up the women, including the maid.
An hour later, the doctor reached home and was shocked to find his family all tied up and informed the police who swung into action.“Within a few minutes of interrogation, the maid’s involvement in the robbery was exposed,” Anna Nagar deputy commissioner S. Manoharan said. A team was sent to Kolkatta on the trail of her husband, Imran, who had camped at a lodge in Arumbakkam.
According to an investigating official, who tailed the suspects, Imran and Hakleema lived in abject poverty and were planning to move to Bangladesh with the valuables. Imran is the second husband of the maid who joined work at the doctor’s house a year ago. “I came to know her through a patient of mine and accommodated her at my house itself,” Dr Anandan said. The cardiothoracic surgeon was generous in his praise for the city police, thanking the entire force from the commissioner to the constable.
All the six accused, Hakleema Bibi, her husband J. Mohammed Imran (27), M. Mohammed Sohail (18), N. Shameem (22), M. Mohammed Shabeer (31) and K. Mohammed Rafi (19) were produced before a city court and remanded in judicial custody.
