Does the Australia snub signal the end of road for Delhi duo
Mumbai: It could be end of the road for many senior Indian cricketers especially Virender Sehwag who mesmerised the fans with his stroke-play in the past.
The selectors have kept faith in Shikhar Dhawan and M. Vijay as openers with promising Karnataka youngster K.L. Rahul as the third opening option.
Sehwag, who has 8586 runs in 104 Tests, has been out of favour from the selectors owing to poor form.
The swashbuckling Delhi batsman has been short off runs at the domestic circuit also.
However former India skipper Ajit Wadekar feels a comeback for Sehwag, at 36, will be tough now though it’s not over. “It may be just a phase. He is not doing well at domestic level.
It will be tough for him to make a comeback, as the stress seems to be on the youngsters. There are a number of players for the opening slot. Many players have gone on to play international cricket in their 40’s, so he might still comeback if he has the passion in him,” Wadekar said.
Sehwag’s state-mate Gautam Gambhir is facing similar fate and senior pacer Zaheer Khan is struggling with injuries. Punjab players Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh played their last Tests during the 2012-13-winter season.
