Madras senior advocate elected to Bar Council of India
Chennai: The Bar Council of India (BCI), in a meeting held in Cochin on Sunday, unanimously elected Mr Manan Kumar Mishra to the post of chairman, and Mr S. Prabakaran, senior advocate of Madras high court, as co-chairman.
The council also elected Mr Bhoje Gowda S.L. as vice-chairman, said secretary, Mr J.R. Sharma. They were elected in the general council meeting of the BCI.
In a release, Mr Sharma stated that the executive committee unanimously elected Mr T.S. Ajith, who represents Kerala, as chairman of the executive committee, and Mr Nilesh Kumar, who represents Jharkhand, as vice-chairman. They will hold office till April 2016.
Mr Vijay Bhatt, managing trustee, and Mr Rajinder Singh Rana, associate managing trustee of the council, were present on the occasion, said Mr Sharma.
He further stated that the council was a statutory body created by Parliament to regulate and represent the Indian bar. It performs the regulatory function by prescribing standards of professional conduct and etiquette and by exercising disciplinary jurisdiction over the bar.
It also sets standards for legal education and grants recognition to universities whose degree in law will serve as qualification for enrolment as an advocate.
