Kozhikode city cops not to target KoL activists on Dec 7 protest day
This is in sharp contrast to the action taken by the Kochi police
KOZHIKODE: The Kozhikode city police have taken a wait and watch attitude towards the ‘Kiss of Love’ protest planned here on December 7. City police commissioner A.V. George said the police would not target the protesters but would only intervene if the protest turned vulgar.
“We will not act against the protesters. But if the protest turns vulgar, then we will have to register a case against the couples. We will not also allow any organisation that aims to block the protest and take law into their hands,” George said. The police would act only if necessary. “It all depends on the situation. We have nothing against the ‘Kiss of Love’ protesters,” he said.
This is in sharp contrast to the action taken by the Kochi police who took the protesters into custody on November 2.
The protesters will also be better prepared this time to avoid the melee that occurred in Kochi. “We will conduct the event with better planning and organise the protest in more than one venue in Kozhikode,” said Mr Rahul Pasupalan, one of the organisers of the event.
More than 100 couples from Kozhikode have already expressed their solidarity with the protest and have come forward to participate in the event. Mr Rahul said many cultural and social activists had expressed their support.
“We do not want to repeat the mistakes that happened in Kochi. Discussions are on to finetune the protest,” he added.
