Denied treatment, street-dweller ‘thrown’ near drainage out of hospital in Gujarat

Government has asked for a report on the matter

Ahmedabad: In a bizarre incident, a staffer at a government-run hospital in Bhavnagar allegedly threw a patient out of the hospital near an open drainage, following which the state government has asked the hospital to submit a report on it.

An unidentified street dweller was admitted at Sir Takhatsinhji general hospital last night in an unconscious condition by some city-based social workers, a hospital staffer said.

The patient was being treated for severe injuries and infection and later in the night when no one around the patient, a hospital staffer allegedly threw him outside near an open drainage, apparently because he was stinking, the staffer added.

"The incident came to light today that an unidentified man admitted here, was thrown out by one of the staffers. Hospital administration is looking into the matter and will take action against the staffer," Resident Medical Officer (RMO), M S Rupareliya said.

Taking cognizance of the matter, the state government has asked the hospital to submit a report.

According to one onlooker Ahmed, the patient was found lying near the drainage in an unconscious condition today and was later shifted to hospital for further treatment.

"I came to know about this inhumane incident. This was probably done by some junior doctor. And I've had a talk with the hospital superintendent and have asked for a detailed report. Stern action will be taken action against the person involved," state Health Minister Nitin Patel said.
