Arun Jaitley returns to Information & Broadcasting for second run
I have been in this ministry before, there was more print media than electronic media
New Delhi: Assuming charge as the information and broadcasting minister, Arun Jaitley on Monday said, the media domain has expanded immensely and the ministry has to look at the changed information process scenario.
Mr Jaitley, who was I&B minister under A.B. Vajpayee in 1999, while referring to his previous stint, said, “I have been in this ministry before, there was more print media than electronic media. Today, th-ere has been a lot of growth of radio and digital mediums.”
Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who joined as minister of state in the ministry, said there was perceived to be a communication gap between the government and the media, and only “one way communication” was taking place.
Transfer of Jaitley may be temporary:
Mr Jaitley was brought in as I&B minister as he was the most “articulate” and “able” face of the BJP to handle the changed scenario. Mr Jaitley is viewed as the “man who can ably project and propagate the image of the Modi government”. Some claim that this shift too is “temporary.”
What raised eyebrows in saffron circles was the elevation of party general secretary J.P. Nadda as Cabinet minister. Mr Nadda replaced Dr Harsh Vardhan as health minister. His induction has reportedly annoyed former Himachal chief minister and senior BJP leader P.K. Dhumal.
To pacify Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje, who was miffed as her son Dushyant was kept out of the Modi ministry yet ag-ain, two clo-se aides were accommodated in the expansion.
