Several other women are in critical condition after the sterilization drive

New Delhi: Expressing concern over the sterilisation tragedy in Bilaspur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday asked Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh to ensure thorough investigation and action in the entire issue in which eight women died due to the botched procedure.

Modi, who left for Myanmar in the morning to attend ASEAN and East Asia summit and was in its capital Naypyitaw, spoke to Singh in the matter.

"The PM spoke to Chhattisgarh CM Dr Raman Singh on the unfortunate tragedy in Bilaspur. The PM expressed concern over the tragedy.

"The PM has asked Dr Raman Singh to ensure a thorough investigation & action in the entire issue," the PMO said in a tweet.

Eight women died and 52 others have been hospitalised due to the botched procedure at a government-organised camp.

Around 60 women were admitted to different hospitals after they complained of complications following sterilisation surgery at the camp held at a private hospital in Pendari village on outskirts of Bilaspur town on Saturday, Bilaspur Collector Siddharth Komal Pardeshi said earlier in the day.
