Furniture is a tricky thing to shop online. You can't judge how a chair or a table will look in your home. But help is at hand. Engineers at the labs of Bangalore-based online furniture retailer Urban Ladder have harnessed Augmented Reality and 3-D imagery to create a mobile app called "Living Spaces", that helps you visualize how a sofa set will look in your living room. Available forAndroid phones and iPhone/iPad, it provides a large graphic or "Marker" showing outlines of a variety of sofas and accessories.
You print it out, place it on the floor of your living room and shoot a close up of the furniture of your choice with your mobile phone. Voila! A 3-D image of that item pops up on your screen, with the background of your room. The marker works like a barcode or QR code of sorts and pulls up the actual dimensions of the sofa.
You can 'move' the sofa around the room, change the upholstery and add accessory furniture, till you are satisfied with the look. Then and only then need you reach out for your credit card to order online. Living Space works even better on the bigger screen of a tablet.
