Homecoming high for ex-Hyderabad captain

HCA honoured former internationals from the city by naming the inner entrances of the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Cricket Association has honoured former internationals from the city by naming the inner entrances of the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium after them. It was heart-warming for the old timers to see the terrace entrances tagged Mohammed Hussain, Gul Mohammed, Abbas Ali Baig, MAK Pataudi, S. Abid Ali, Kenia Jayantilal, P. Krishnamurthy and M. V. Narasimha Rao.
Better known as Bobjee in cricket circles, Narasimha Rao, who is now settled in Ireland, was overwhelmed by the gesture. “It is a pleasant surprise that brings back a flood of memories. I am very proud today,” he told this newspaper during the India-Sri Lanka third ODI at the RGICS.It was indeed a hearty homecoming for the right-hand batsman and a leg-spinner who played four Tests for India in the late 1970s. “It was nice to meet Kapil Dev, my roommate during our playing days and Gavaskar too,” Bobjee said.
Bobjee, who captained Hyderabad to the Ranji Trophy title in 1987, is currently coach of the Irish county team North West Warriors, “a young side with an average age of 23 that transformed itself from being the weakest last season to champions this time around.”
He has coached the Ireland national team too earlier. In 2011, Bobjee became the first Indian cricketer to be conferred with the Member of British Empire (MBE) for his contribution to the sport and also for community service through cricket during the testing times faced by the ethnic community in Northern Ireland.
