Shantanu Moitra's journey from Bollywood to Tollywood

The music composer was in Hyderabad for the music release of his first Telugu film

Hyderabad: While social media has been abuzz with talk about the launch of the first song from PK, the film’s music director, Shantanu Moitra, was in the city for the audio release of his first Telugu film Na Bangaaru Talli.

The National Film Award for Best Music Direction for Na Bangaaru Talli, is of course, special. But that wasn’t the only reason why, he chose to be here. “PK will have a launch for every song but an event like this won’t happen again. Also, Aamir is there to handle the launch,” he says.

And there’s a story behind how he got his first T-town film, “I met Sunita (an activist and the producer) at a TED talk. I told her that if she ever needs my assistance I’ll be glad to help. Years later, I got a call from her, when I was completing Madras Café. After I watched the film, I couldn’t stop thinking about it for three days.” Talking about Rajkumar Hirani’s PK, Shantanu says, “Each song has a different character to it. After a long time, people will hear some of the best love songs.”

Shantanu’s association with Raju goes back a long way with 3 Idiots, Lage Raho Munnabhai etc. But with Raju, who’s one of the best filmmakers in the country, also comes Aamir, who’s a perfectionist. “I don’t interact with Aamir much. But with Raju it’s a different story. As soon as he thinks of a movie, he gives me a call. It’s like we are playing badminton and thinking about a particular scene of the film,” he says.

Regarding his friends in the film fraternity, he says, “Gulzar saab is my friend. In fact, he was the one who taught me how to dress properly for formal events. I’m a jeans and t-shirt guy. My book, Wings of Music, that will be out soon, talks about all of this, of our world beyond music.”
