Ali Zafar to shed his ‘lover boy’ image with ‘Kill Dil’

The actor feels lucky that Aditya Chopra and Shaad Ali gave him the opportunity

New Delhi: Ali Zafar found fame in Bollywood as a romantic hero but the Pakistani singer-actor is now keen to change that image with his gun-toting, gangster avatar in his upcoming release 'Kill Dil'.

Zafar, 34, has turned gangster in the upcoming Yash Raj film. The 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan' star said he took up the Shaad Ali-directed film, as he was quite bored of his earlier image.

"It was a conscious decision to opt for 'Kill Dil' to change that image. I wanted to do something different because I want to be known as a versatile actor. I don't like to play safe. I like to experiment with my looks, acting and projects. I want to create a niche for myself. In this film, people will see a different side of me," Zafar told PTI in an interview.

The 'Tere Bin Laden' star did not watch any Hollywood or Bollywood gangster drama, as he wanted to bring in certain originality to the character of Tutu in the film, releasing on November 14. "I wanted to create a very original role for myself which I would always be remembered for. It would be my own creation. Hence, it is not inspired from anyone," Zafar said.

The actor started off his career in showbiz as a successful musician and shifted to Pakistani TV soaps before making it big to the Hindi film industry with debut satire film 'Tere Bin Laden'.

"The journey has been fantastic so far. I was one the first ones to come from Pakistan and start a fantastic journey here in Bollywood. Out of the five films, I have given three box-office hits and the sixth one is looking very promising," he said.

Zafar feels lucky that Aditya Chopra and Shaad gave him an opportunity to star in 'Kill Dil’, which is different from his previous rom-coms.

"I got a call from the studio and Adi told me about the film. He said that the film would be directed by Shaad and asked me to meet him. I met Shaad for narration and I liked the script. It was an honour for me to star in this project as it is contrary to my romantic guy image in Bollywood," he said. In the film, Zafar would be seen sharing screen space with Ranveer Singh, Parineeti Chopra and Govinda.

"Ranveer is very easy and lovely to work with. We just became best of buddies from our first meeting on set. We had a pretty good time on the sets. Parineeti is a lovely actress and a talented singer too. She is very easy going," he said. The actor has sung 'Nakhriley' in the movie. "I have sung Nakhriley in the film which is one of the most expensive songs of the film. The set took almost three weeks to construct. Singing and dancing wise it is one of the most technical shoots in the film," he said.
