Ex-shipping minister meets fishermen families

Vasan met the anguished families and consoled them with an aid of Rs20,000
Rameswaram: Former Union minister G.K.Vasan, who quit the Congress recently to float his own party, on Saturday visited the families of five fishermen who have been sentenced to death by Sri Lankan court recently on charges of drug trafficking. In his first ‘political’ visit after the announcement of a new party, Vasan met the anguished families in Thangachimadam near Rameswaram and consoled them with an aid of Rs20,000 for each family.
Earlier, he faced resistance from some fisherwomen who asked him straight what he did for them when he was a minister in the Congress-led government. Later, he told mediapersons that he had voiced for the fishermen during his tenure as a union minister. “But my voice could not redress their grievances entirely. We expected the present government to make determined efforts on the fishermen’s issue but it remains to be apathetic. Tamil people will not forgive them,” he said.
Raking up Katchatheevu issue, he said it is key to all fishermen’s problems and went on to add that fishers do not have easy access to the islet even for drying their nets and offering prayers at the church despite being their traditional fishing area.
