Tamil Nadu sends Rs 20 Lakh for India to file plea in Sri Lanka Supreme Court
Appeal tomorrow against death to fishermen
Chennai: A few days after the state government met the family members of five fishermen convicted by Lankan court, the government on Saturday scaled up the efforts to file an appeal on November 10 in the Sri Lankan Supreme Court challenging the death sentences awarded to five Indian fishermen.
A statement from the secretariat said, “Steps to file an appeal on November 10 are being made on a war-footing and the state officials are closely following up the issue with the Centre. Best legal experts had been finalised by the Indian High Commission in Colombo to appear on behalf of the five innocent Tamil Nadu fishermen.”
“On the orders of the Chief Minister, Rs 20 lakh has been despatched today to the Indian High Commission to meet the legal expenses for filing the appeal,” the statement read reiterating that the state would continue to support the cause of fishermen P. Emerson, R. Wilson, P. Augustus, J. Lanklet and K. Prasath of Rameswaram.
It may be noted that in August 2012, former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa ordered disbursal of monthly assistance of Rs 7,500 to the families of each of the five fishermen and also sanctioned Rs 2 lakh assistance to each of the five families.
