TDP govt failing to provide relief to Hudhud-hit in Andhra Pradesh: YSR Congress

New Delhi: Alleging that the ruling TDP in Andhra Pradesh had failed to provide adequate relief to the victims of cyclonic storm Hudhud, YSR Congress Party leader YS

Jaganmohan Reddy on Saturday approached the Centre seeking financial aid for the affected areas.

Accompanied by his party's MPs, Reddy submitted a memorandum with Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley here in which he alleged that many farmers had been exposed to difficulties after they believed TDP's electoral promises on crop loan waiver as the party urged them not to repay loans or the interest on the same.

"Many farmers, believing these promises, did not repay the loans and interest, with the result that they all became defaulters and ineligible for fresh loans. As a consequence, their insurance was also not renewed. Now the situation is that they neither have loan waiver nor insurance," he said.

"Thanks to Chandrababu (who) assured that he would waive loans", most of the farmers affected during the cyclone have no insurance, added Jaganmohan, the Leader of Opposition in Andhra Pradesh Assembly.

Highlighting the damage caused by Hudhud in the state after its bifurcation earlier this year, Reddy called for liberal financial assistance for Andhra Pradesh so that succour may be provided to the people in distress.

"Fresh crop loans should be granted to all affected farmers, including the tenant farmers. Entire insurance eligibility should be given upfront to all farmers," said Reddy.

Briefing reporters after the meeting with Jaitley, Reddy charged that people in Andhra Pradesh were complaining about the "non-responsiveness of the state government".

Cyclonic storm Hudhud had ripped through India's eastern coast on October 12, leaving in its wake a massive trail of destruction and loss.
