Chikkallasandra lake encroachment cleared

The lake area is 12.26 acres

BENGALURU: Commotion prevailed for some time at Chikkallasandra Main Road on Friday morning when the district administration authorities started bulldozing the unauthorized constructions on Chikkallasandra lake.

Residents of some of the sheds came out and said that they were not given prior notice, while some said they had purchased the property by shelling out their hard earned money. They also claimed that they were paying tax to the civic body.

Traffic flow was affected when as many as nine earth movers began to bulldoze unauthorized constructions and sheds that were built illegally by encroaching upon Chikkallasandra lake area.

The authorities have recovered land around the lake worth Rs. 750 crores by razing sheds and commercial establishments. However, residences and the school building have been left untouched.

The lake area is 12.26 acres. But the entire lake has been encroached upon, leaving no mark of the water body, said Tahasildar B. V. Dayanand.

“However, we will write a letter to the Deputy Commissioner (Urban) about the presence of residences and school buildings and the same will be sent to the government for clarification.

The government will have power to decide on their future course of action on the encroachment,” he said.

Properties on Chikkallasandra Main Road are valued at not less than Rs. 20,000 per sq. feet. Since the lake falls under the BBMP jurisdiction, the BBMP authorities have been urged to fence the recovered land.
