Srinagar: The Army on Friday accepted responsibility for the death of two teenagers after soldiers fired on a car at Chattergam, near Srinagar, earlier this week. The firing had left two others injured. A senior Army officer said: “We sincerely wish the killing of civilians had not happened. We share the sorrow of the families.”
Lt. Gen. D.S. Hooda, GOC-in-C, Northern Command, said at a press conference: “There was some information about a white car with terrorists. Obviously the identity w-as mistaken in this case. We take responsibility.”
On Monday, five teen-agers were shot at while driving in the Chattergam area of Budgam district. Two died and two were injured, but one managed to escape. The Army’s claimed that it fired at the car when it didn’t stop despite being signalled at two checkpoints.
