Residents gherao Tantea staff for apathy

Residents took the step due to failure of staff to manage man elephant conflict
Ooty: Residents of the Kolappalli Tantea area gheraoed the state-owned Tantea organisation’s staff for their failure to take steps to manage the man-elephant conflict in Kolappalli near Pandalur. The gherao lasted nearly five hours, the people insistent about publicising their plight and finding a solution to the threat from the stray wild jumbos in and around the human settlements there.
The agitators who thronged the Tantea-1 division office at Kolappalli at around 8.30 am on Thursday stayed on till 1.30 pm. The agitating public said that around 18 wild jumbos, which strayed into their residential areas around the Tantea plantations, had been posing a threat to the life and property of the residents living there.
Though the residents had been pleading with the Tantea officials to find a solution to the problem and chase the jumbos away or take necessary steps to prevent them entering residential limits, the Tantea officials had failed to take any concrete action.
Hundreds of residents had therefore resorted to an agitation, a resident of the area said. Only after the police held talks with them and promised speedy action in the near future to tackle the jumbo threat there did the agitating citizens disperse.
