Nominal property tax in Telangana likely
Hyderabad: If the Telangana government approves, households in GHMC paying property tax in the Re 1 to Rs 4,000 slab will be exempted. They will, however, have to pay a nominal fee to the corporation.
The scheme will only be applicable to residential buildings. While the GHMC will lose Rs 100-200 crore with the exemption, more than 10.14 lakh households will benefit.
The GHMC standing committee took this unanimous decision in the 5th ordinary meeting and it will be presented to the government for approval.
If the proposal is passed, GHMC will be the first corporation in India to implement this sch-eme. Hyderabad Mayor Mr Mohammad Majid Hussain said, “This was a unanimous decision strictly for residential buildings. All assessed households falling under the property tax slab from Re 1 to Rs 4,000 will be exempted from paying the tax.”
The GHMC will charge a nominal fee (yet undecided) to keep a tab on the number of households in Telangana. With this exemption the corporation revenue may reduce by Rs 100-200 crore, but it will directly benefit 10.14 lakh households, especially the middle and lower classes. The resolution will be passed in the general body meeting scheduled to on November 15 and it will then be sent to the government for approval.
The total assessed households under GHMC limits are 30.20 lakh and the revenue (tax collection) of the corporation has increased from Rs 300 crore to Rs 1,000 crore. This term, the corporation is expecting the revenue to touch Rs 1,500 crore.
Meanwhile the much-hyped LED street lights proposal of the GHMC was dropped in the GHMC standing committee meeting on Thursday. The committee rejected the Rs 500 crore worth proposal which mooted to change around 3.40 lakh streetlights.
The GHMC has also decided to construct night shelters for patients and their attendants at ENT Hospital- Koti, Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences, Osmania General Hospital, Niloufer Hospital, Maternity Hospital- Koti and Peltaburz, Gandhi Hospital .
