BENGALURU: Mayor N. Shantakumari on Thursday assured that as promised, the BBMP will not send garbage to Mandur from December 1 and that arrangements have been made to divert the waste to various processing centres.
Addressing a press conference, she urged the citizens to segregate waste at source, which she said will play a major role in reducing the quantum of waste reaching processing units.
After holding a meeting with senior officials of the BBMP, she said that the zonal commissioners had been directed to ensure garbage was segregated in all wards coming under their respective zones.
She said that the contractors will be held responsible if they fail to ensure segregation.
The BBMP had identified around 15,000 bulk generators who have failed to process the waste at source. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the floating of ward-wise tenders and the BBMP was gearing up to float tenders for 98 wards.
Tender procedure is lengthy and it would take about four months to finalize the tenders, she added.
Blaming the BVG India Pvt Ltd. garbage contractor who caused a mess of the garbage contract, the mayor said that the BBMP has slapped notices against the contractor.
However, they have obtained a stay. The BBMP is now trying to get the stay vacated and blacklist the contractor so that fresh tenders could be called, said Ms. Shantakumari.
The BBMP is sticking to its promise of not sending the garbage to Mandur from December 1. The quantity of garbage being sent to Mandue has been reduced 650 tonnes from 1,500 tonnes.
Garbage will be diverted to processing units at KCDC in Bommanahalli zone, Bingipura and Doddaballapura.
