Centre to alter rules for VIP guards

Security forces should have stringent norms for those personnel deployed on VIP duty

New Delhi: In what is being viewed as a direct fallout of the Robert Vadra episode, the Centre will soon direct all security and state police forces to draft new standard operating procedures for personnel deployed on VIP duty.

The Centre will advise the security forces to ensure that the role of the police personnel working as personal security officers should be restricted to providing security cover to the protectee and that they should not perform any other activity even if the VIP directs them to do so.

Mr Vadra recently got into an argument with a news network TV crew member following which his security personnel allegedly detained the journalists for more than 20 minutes. The incident resulted in a major political controversy as the security personnel apparently wanted to delete the footage.

Sources said since then the Centre has been examining the issue closely and is keen that security forces should have stringent norms for those personnel deployed on VIP duty.

“The basic function of the PSO or others on VIP duty is to ensure that the protectee is not bodily harmed. For this these police personnel are professionally trained. But they are not the employees of the VIP and should not be taking directions from him or her and then indulging in some activity that violates the law,” a senior government official said.
